Our History
Fish has always been a DiFebo family staple. From Philip DiFebo's great-grandfather who was a
fisherman in Italy to his grandfather who operated a fish market in Wilmington, Delaware on King
Street, it was only a matter of time for this man to continue a proud family tradition. Philip
(shown in picture to right with wife Mary) opened Feby's Fishery in June of 1974
on New Road in Elsmere, Delaware. At that time, Philip would wake up at 3am in order to drive to
Cape May, New Jersey so that he could meet the fishing boats before dawn, haggle some deals, and
haul his fish back to Elsmere by the store's 9am opening! Of course now he has a much better way
to make this happen: He sends his son on those early morning missions! Over 20 years later, the
deals are easier due to the solid reputation Feby's has built and the fish don't come from just
The Jersey Shore any longer;
they are just as fresh as in the past, but the fish you see in the restaurant and store come
from as close as New Jersey and as far as New Zealand!
Feby's Fishery didn't just grow because of its fresh fish however... Over time the growing
number of loyal patrons asked for recipies, prepared fish, and those legendary crabcakes.
With this daily peppering of questions, it was only natural for the small New Road store to
greatly expand to its present facility on Lancaster Pike in Wilmington, Delaware. So, in 1984,
armed with a loyal following and a dedication to the finest seafood, Philip DiFebo opened the
much larger Feby's Fishery this time not just comprised of the fish store, but with a large
dining room, a full-service bar, and banquet facilities!
The restaurant's decor featured various pictures from fishing expeditions, famous patrons,
and even the outboard racing-boat that captured so many titles and held so many records. Of
course the attached market is still the only place to get the freshest fish, the best crabs,
and the most succulent lobsters that Feby's built its reputation on, but the restaurant gave
the guests the opportunity to sit down, relax, and let the talented chefs prepare all of that
for you!
As all things evolve, so did Feby's. In 2002, Philip DiFebo had the idea to remodel the
full-service bar and the dining area to better serve his loyal following. In addition to the
gorgeous dining area and bar downstairs, another dining area was added on the second floor to
accomodate even more of the hungry patrons that have come to Feby's to eat for over 30 years.
